Swiss trombonist David Bruchez-Lalli, born in 1975 in Fully, has been performing as solo trombonist in the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich since 2005 and teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2008. Before that, he was engaged as trombonist in the Zurich Opera House Orchestra for a little over ten years. Bruchez-Lalli began his teaching career as director of the trombone class at the Conservatory of Lausanne and held a professorship at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold (2005-2010).

Bruchez-Lalli completed his musical studies at the Conservatory of Lausanne in 1997 (attaining a Konzertdiplom degree under Professors René Vouillamoz and Roger Bobo). During his studies, a stipendium (from the Migros and Kiefer-Hablitzel Foundations) enabled him to pursue his continuing studies in New York, London and at the Herbert von Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic.

For the juries of many renowned competitions, it was Bruchez-Lalli’s superlative musicality and soloistic virtuosity on the trombone that left them convinced. Bruchez-Lalli became the first brass instrumentalist to make it into the finale of the Eurovision Competition for Young Musicians in Warsaw in 1994, and in 1999, he won the Tribune des Jeunes Musiciens in Bratislava, a competition organized under the patronage of UNESCO by the European Broadcasting Station. In Switzerland, Bruchez-Lalli’s music was met with high acclaim as well, and he is prizewinner of the Concours Suisse de Musique pour la Jeunesse, the Geneva International Music Competition and the Branimir Slokar Competition in Grenchen.

Bruchez-Lalli has made his appearance as a chamber musician in various ensembles at international festivals, among them the Wien Modern and the Festival di Ottoni in Verona. Within Switzerland, he has participated in the international Davos Festival Young Artists in Concert. Bruchez-Lalli has performed at the Swiss Brass Week, the Lucerne Festival (Brass Ensemble Lucerne Festival Orchestra), with Guido Kremer and Peter Sadlo at the “les muséiques” festival in Basel and at the Tibor Varga Festival in Sion together with Christian Lindberg and Hakan Hardenberger.

Bruchez-Lalli has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras in Switzerland and abroad, including the Sinfonietta de Lausanne, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Warschauer Nationalorchester, Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Camerata, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Kremerata Baltica and Kammerakademie Potsdam. His repertoire reaches from works of the Baroque (performed on historical instruments) through classical concertos of the trombone literature and all the way to the “New Music” of contemporary composers, performed with renowned ensembles such as the Opera Nova and Collegium Novum in Zurich and the Contrechamps in Geneva.

Since 2003, Bruchez-Lalli has made several conducting debuts. He gave his Zurich debut (Stravinsky, L’Histoire du Soldat) with the Orchestra Academy of the Zurich Opera House. During that same year, he was guest at the Vienna Master Courses (conducting the orchestra) under the direction of Salvador Mas Conde. In 2007, he studied at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen (USA) at the invitation of David Zinman. In 2008, he conducted works by Mahler, Debussy and Prokofiev at the “les muséiques” festival in Basel. Bruchez-Lalli made his debut with the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich in 2010 and has been re-invited back twice for next season.
